An article on the Jaebeom Controversy

October 3, 2009

As I was browsing the net for anything about the Chuseok Special, I found an article in K Bites about an actress wishing Park Jaebeom’s return to the limelight. The article is nothing special really. Numerous celebrity and public figures have stated their stand in the myspace thing and commented positively for the 2pm member. The article did made me think about the whole situation.

With all the warm and positive feedbacks towards his comeback, why is Jaebeom still not in Korea? Or at least an inch closer from where he stands a month ago. If the whole incident did not happen, 2pm along with SNSD might have been all over these Chuseok Specials. No offense to ELFs, but 2pm has been the boy group to beat in terms of popularity this year. Unlike Super Junior and SHINee, every member of 2pm had been very much popular.

With that saying, I don’t understand why JYP is not going the distance when it comes to bringing him back. Since the Wonder Girls left for the US, 2pm is the only one that has been putting JYP on the map. For those of you who don’t know, JYP’s active talents are the Wonder Girls, 2pm, 2am, and Joo. The latter two aren’t really that established popularity-wise. I’m starting to think that maybe there is something deeper in this whole controversy than they ought to be. Maybe there is a conspiracy. It really makes you think.

When the myspace incident happened a month ago, I initially speculated that it was the work of a SHINee or a Super Junior fan. 2pm’s popularity has been surprisingly fast. Barely a year before their debut, already two mutizen. That is quite rare. I thought maybe SM fans or even SM himself concocted the situation to put down 2pm. No offense to SM fans, I have this mentality that Lee Soo Min is all for the money and would do anything to stabilize his income. Look at what’s happening with DBSK.

The biggest question still is why is JYP and his company not doing anything? Maybe I don’t know much about the industry but I do know that I should protect whatever is helping me bring food into my mouth. 2pm is the standing figure of JYP at the moment and 2am can never bring what 2pm has brought.

In the silent protest done by Hottest in front of the JYP building a few weeks ago, I’ve read that what fans want is for JYP to retract Jaebeom’s resignation. That’s all they want. Not for Jaebeom to comeback ASAP, not for Jaebeom to perform in the coming Dream Concert and not for Jaebeom to perform again with 2pm. What the fans want is the assurance that 2pm is still a seven member group. I don’t think fans would even care if Jaebeom will perform again with the group a year later. As long as the company still recognize Jaebeom as a 2pm member, then all is well. No CDs are returned, no merchandises are banned, and no post-its in their building.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Jaebeom stated that he wants to comeback to 2pm? So why not make the announcement that Jaebeom is still part of 2pm but needs time to move on from the incident? Or maybe JYP doesn’t really want Jaebeom to comeback. I don’t know. There’s just too many things that doesn’t make sense. Why is JYP not trying that hard to bring him back.

I’m thinking maybe netizens. But how many are they? I don’t think they are even a portion of the number of people who wants him back. Every idol group has antifans. Actually everyone has antifans. What makes these Jaebeom-haters special?

My friend, the same one who thinks male idols are gay, told me that maybe this might be a publicity stunt. JYP did report that 2pm will be coming back with their first full length album sometime in mid-October. And if Jaebeom does comeback, the sales will go through the roof, my friend says. If this really is the reason for the company’s silence, then kudos to JYP for making such a dangerous marketing move. But if it’s not, then what is?

I’m seriously afraid for 2pm. All seven of them. Their fate is in the hands of either a sage or a fool. Question is, whose hands are they?

JYP, what are you doing?

September 17, 2009

Yesterday, JYP has posted that 2pm will continue to perform as 6 members because Park Jaebeom is not ready to comeback. I’m sorry to JYP, I think this is a foolish decision. 2pm fans around the world has expressed their disappointment in how the entertainment company acted on Jaebeom’s situation. To continue the group without the controversial member will just be suicidal for the group.

Jaebeom’s departure brought too much sadness and despair to everyone. If JYP really had to continue 2pm with just 6 members, I think he should wait 2-3 months before bringing 2pm again to the public’s eyes. The wound is still fresh as they say. The Dream Concert is just around the corner and I’m afraid that what happened to SNSD last year will happen to 2pm this year. Fans will sometimes show hate to express their love.

As I said before, I have already accepted the fact that Jaebeom is not coming back but JYP should have been more careful. His message does seem like an assurance that Jaebeom will never come back. With all the support Jaebeom has been getting from fans in Korea and as well as abroad and also from Korean celebrities, JYP should keep the thought of 2pm as 6 members in low profile.

A few weeks ago, JYP has announced that 2pm’s fist full length album is completed and will comeback somewhere in October. If 2pm will continue their comeback, I’m afraid the album would not be as half as successful as their ‘Time For Change’ album. I’ll repeat, if JYP really intends to continue 2pm as six members, then he should keep the group from the public for a good 2 months at the least if he wants the full length album to be successful.

Jang Wooyoung has posted a message on his minihompy. I’m not sure if it’s a message of support or is he’s just ranting or something. The message goes like, “If you wish to live, you will die. If you wish to die, you will live.” Out of all the members of 2pm, Wooyoung was affected the most with the controversy. I honestly don’t know what his message is trying to imply. It seems out of the blue and out there.

I’m actually excited on how this controversy will end. It’s like a soap opera. I do hope ends happily whether Jaebeom comes back or not.

Let’s be strong and move on

September 13, 2009

It’s been over a week since this whole myspace controversy began and it doesn’t seem to be dying down. I still can’t believe that this whole thing started because of a 4 year old comment. Netizens must be made up of more fans in their early teens. I have this impression that they think that the Jabeom of 4 years ago is the same Jaebeom we are seeing now. I’ve been reading some of the comment they’ve made in Daum. I can read Hangul but I know only a few words.

I’m calmer now than I was a week ago and I sorted my thought. Honestly, I really think it would be best for everyone in 2pm to just take a break. 2-3 months at the least. It’s not that the public is against them, it’s just that I think they need time to sort out their emotions and to stabilize themselves. I suggest to JYP to remove 2pm from the public view completely. I know how traumatic it must have been for everyone, members and fans alike.

According to K Bites, Taecyeon and Wooyoung would be removed as MCs of Inkigayo starting next week. I really think this is a good decision. Take a look at Taecyeon and Wooyoung in the following vid. Wooyoung has always been the funny and Taecyeon the happy one. They have always shown their optimism in almost every situation. But look at them in the vid right now. They looked drain. Especially Wooyoung. His hyperactivity seems to have diminished.

The 2pm fan’s protest was this afternoon. I applaud that they didn’t went crazy unlike other fan clubs. No offense to ELFs, but they do seem crazy. Remember the 13 thing? Actually, most of the SM fans are crazy. I honestly feel that the 2pm fans gained respect by protesting as peacefully as they did. Here’s a vid.

I have already accepted the fact that Park Jaebeom won’t be coming back. And I feel everyone should as well. 2pm really made a run and we have to remember that Jaebeom wasn’t the only one who put the group on top. There are six more. Actually, my fave member has always been Junho. I strongly feel that he is too underrated. Anyway, I would like it so much if Park Jaebeom would comeback but if he doesn’t, I would still support 2pm.

What happened a week ago really hurt a lot of people. I hope netizens who started this controversy will learn from this and will think first before they act. As they say, the pen is mightier than the sword. I strongly feel that the whole group should leave Korea and just be with each other. Korea seems to be a place of horror right now.

I found this tribute vid a few days ago. I think the song is fitting. 2pm Fighting!
