Link Migration

June 13, 2011

It’s been a while guys. But to be clear, I’m not blogging once more. This post is just to inform you that the links to the music charts and everything else on my blog roll (Twitter, HomePage, Online Chart etc) will be migrated to my youtube channel.  I’m doing this as a favor to a friend. Don’t know why she wants it to be like that but it seems to mean a lot to her. Anyway, here’s the link to my channel.

Hope you guys an entertaining life. See you around…

ShockedFan says Goodbye

January 1, 2011

As I stated a few months ago, I have decided to end shockedfan.wordpress.com to readily prepare myself to the next phase of my life. I’ll be graduating after this semester and kpop has no place in my future. So why bother stick with something that will bring nothing to your growth? I wanna build a career and I wanna be as successful as I can be. Also, I can’t be doing this forever. And as the year 2010 ends, it is a perfect way to end something that has become endearing to me.

I got into Kpop in 2008. Late May to be exact. And if you’ve been following me for the past year and a half, you would know that my Kpop fascination is highly attributed to the Wonder Girls song “So Hot”. I actually know Super Junior first because of my sister. She has this undying infatuation to Kim Kibum. But though she keeps telling me about the group, I never really got into them. They kinda remind me of those American boy groups that emerge in 90s. Selling songs with their looks.

But one day, I heard my sister playing this Super Junior song that caught my attention. I don’t know if you know “Sapphire Blue.” But after hearing that, it kept playing in my mind. So I googled Super Junior and “Sapphire Blue”. One of the search results was this post in popseoul.com. I checked the article and I think it was something about Super Junior T. Anyway, I went to the Home Page of popseoul and read this comeback article on Wonder Girls’ and their track “So Hot”. I listened to it and I like it. I wasn’t crazy about it yet but I did like it.

I forgotten all about it after that. I checked on Wonder Girls on youtube, when I was online again a few days later. The latest video post was this 2008 Dream Concert performance of theirs. And I was really blown away. That Dream Concert performance is the first Kpop performance I saw, and I remember how amazed I was. I was like “if everyone in Kpop performs like this, then I’ve been missing a lot.” For one thing, they distribute the song as evenly as possible unlike PCD and they perform, not just sing. Unlike the Spice Girls. And that was what really got me, the dancing.

A lot of girls now can dance, but what Wonder Girls still have is this synchronized blocking which I think only After School can replicate. Scratch that, I think as a group, f(x), Wonder Girls and After School are the only ones that can be deemed as great female dance groups. Again, I emphasize the edges. You’ll know Wonder Girls can dance because the edges of the routine are on the mark. The attention to details were also amazing. My favorite parts are that V-Line intro, that switch from Sohee to Ye Eun, and the entire rap.

Seeing Wonder Girls perform in that Dream Concert made me think what other groups would be worth my attention. I checked the other performances of the event. I saw SNSD, I rejected them quickly because that “Kissing You” was a bit troubling. I mean adult women holding lollipops, in mini skirt and singing “Kissing You, baby” is a bit like a porn. No offense intended. I grew up in the US and if SNSD will sing that, my impression will be the same as everyone else. Then there’s Super Junior Happy, MC Mong, then Epik High. And so on and so forth. To cut it short, aside for Wonder Girls, the only one I liked at the event was SHINee. I don’t like Replay but as performers, they were pretty good. Funny, DBSK was there too. I wonder why I didn’t remember them?

For over a year, I’ve been fascinated with Wonder Girls and SHINee. Well, Wonder Girls in the most part. SHINee just really got to me when they released “AMIGO”. A lot of groups emerge and that I got introduce. Some of which I like and some I don’t. Some are obviously just pretty faces.

What’s really sad about Korea is that they take into consideration the outer beauty too much. I’ve been to Korea and you just can’t imagination how much shallow Koreans are. Well, they are like just in Korea. When they leave the country, they become much more open-minded. I’m not hating on Koreans but it’s really sad how the good-looking just gets their way. I know it happens in life in general but in Korea it’s 3X worst.

Going back, as I’ve stated I’m departing from Kpop. I made this decision over 3 months ago. And in that time, it made me realize stuff. For one thing, this is one of the reason why Shinhwa, g.o.d., and FINKL’s popularity declined dramatically. It’s not that their fans abandoned them. They just moved on. Like what I’m doing right now. What defined an idol groups’ success is their fans. It is so true that Kpop is just for teenagers and students. For people who don’t have commitments and obligations that entails to their survival.

DBSK is the most popular group in Korea right now. But honestly, they are not taking in new fans. That 700,000 Cassies were the same 700,000 Cassies 3 years ago, with an exception of some few. What I’m trying to say, when young Koreans finally have the consciousness, to choose the fanclub to belong, they will not choose someone who debuted 3 years before their awakened consciousness. They will choose on the new groups that will catch fancy. A few years later, the cycle repeats. My point, when you start to come down, you won’t be able to come up again. Well, as high as you were before you were gone.

A few months ago I wrote this post saying that SNSD, Kara, 2PM should invest their time in promoting overseas. Because for a fact, that their popularity are going down already. I want to put emphasis on Kara and SNSD since their group concept is pretty much what other new cute girl groups are doing. And a year from now, fresher and younger groups will emerge that will leave the “just okay” groups in the dust. Cause like fashion, Kpop is obsessed with youth.

Sistar, T-ara, MBLAQ, and Infinite are the successors of the throne of SNSD, 2PM, Kara, 2NE1, 2AM and SHINee. Just as they succeeded Wonder Girls, DBSK and Big Bang. The other groups will succumb to newer and fresher idols that will come out. f(x) for example will surely plummet when they start promoting without Amber which I think they will soon.

Please continue loving Wonder Girls until you can. As well as Big Bang, MBLAQ, 2NE1, 2AM, Infinite, and SHINee. I think they really deserve love since they have been giving quality performances. DBSK should be included but I would be delusional. The truth is staring at us in our faces. They have disbanded.

This post is quite long but I just really want to say everything I want to say before I leave. And in my departure, I think it is only fitting that I should end my Kpop phase with the same video that made me fall in love with it. Here’s Wonder Girls’ “So Hot” performance in the 2008 Dream Concert.

AJA! Fighting!

Most Talented Idol Group

December 31, 2010

Finally, we got to our #1 Talented Idol Group. I know fans will disagree but try to look at it as a non-fan point of view.

DBSK and Big Bang are no doubt the best idol that is out there. They’re not just an idol group, but they are performers. Individually, each member gives a portion of something that makes their respective group successful. And I’m not talking about being good in variety. It’s actually interesting to point out that both DBSK and Big Bang’s vocals are what put them on top, and that their dancing is mediocre. Which is odd nowadays since idol groups are known more to be in sync in dancing that good in singing. Again, when I say their dancing is mediocre, I meant their dancing is just ok. They can dance but just ok.

But saying that, it wasn’t that close. Big Bang lead in everything against DBSK. Yes, I’m saying it, Big Bang is the most talented Idol Group in Korea. A few posts ago, I stated that the ranking seems to be predictable because it wasn’t that close. Unlike 2PM and SHINee, everytime I plug in a factor, they switch ranking. Both Big Bang and DBSK are solid in their performance but Big Bang has more variety and depth in terms of singing. Also, Big Bang music caters to more people than DBSK.

These two groups would be remembered for all time in Kpop. The vocals are just impressive unlike the current idols. Ok, I’m gonna be tactless here. I hope no one will take it too personally. There are idols right now who are on top in the industry but are just ok. Most of them are female groups. For one SNSD. No offense. SNSD are just ok. If they’re not cute, I don’t think they would even be still together. Another one is Super Junior and Kara. Again, I’m not saying they cannot sing, but they’re just okay. Yes, there are members who can sing, but not everyone CAN sing. And compare these groups with Big Bang and DBSK, there shouldn’t even be a comparison. I’ll go back with what I said in my previous posts. There’s a big difference between a person who CAN sing and a person who can handle a tune.

It’s actually too bad that DBSK disbanded. I know some will react, but after everything that has happened, a reconciliation is just hopeful thinking. SM is very prideful and they will never succumb to JYJ’s demands. It’s either their way or the highway. Anyway, together with Big Bang, they had this potential to put Korean singers on the map.

I’m actually excited for YG’s overseas plans for Big Bang than their Korean comeback. Don’t take this the wrong way but I think their time in the Korean spotlight has ended. I’m not saying their unpopular. But from what I’ve seen in Kpop, you can’t be gone this long and expect to still have the popularity you had. A vintage example is g.o.d. JYP’s first group have the title as the most sold album ever. From my understanding, their’ “Road” album is the only idol album that has reached over 1 million albums sold. That’s a lot. A brief comparison today is SNSD’s albums. All three albums of SNSD this year only reached 300,000 sales. Again, that’s 3 albums combined already comparing it to one album of g.o.d. Only a third of what g.o.d. produced. But after that, g.o.d.’s popularity declined. Stay tune for my farewell post and I will explain what I meant by this. Going back to Big Bang, I think YG should concentrate on breaking overseas market like what Wonder Girls are doing. Because in Kpop, everything changes in a blink of an eye.

There you have it, the Most Talented Idol Group that Korea has offered the world. And I will end this project of mine with my favorite performance of DBSK and Big Bang. I hope they will do well.

Big Bang – Haru Haru (Acoustic)

DBSK – You’re My Melody

Big Bang – Last Farewell

20 Most Popular Kpop Artist in Facebook

December 17, 2010

As of Dec 17, here are the top 20 Korean artist in Facebook. I provided the link for reference.

01.) Super Junior – 1,483,914 link
02.) Big Bang – 624,207 link
03.) 2NE1 – 531,161 link
04.) Wonder Girls – 513,586 link
05.) 2PM – 513,525 link
06.) U-Kiss – 415,559 link
07.) Rain – 285,913 link
08.) BoA – 265,833 link
09.) SHINee – 258,445 link
10.) SS501 – 254,475 link
11.) SNSD – 244,945 link
12.) Super Junior M – 225,545 link
13.) T-ara – 207,880 link
14.) MBLAQ – 198,795 link
15.) 2AM – 167,145 link
16.) DBSK – 137,206 link
17.) After School – 107,475 link
18.) Brown Eyed Girls – 66,487 link
19.) 4Minute – 51,164 link
20.) Kara – 46,184 link

Seeing the ranking, it’s a bit surprising that the artist that are dominating Korea right now, didn’t even made it to the top 10. SNSD and 2AM are way down on the chart. I’m especially surprise that SNSD is that low. I mean they sell so much album but yet they don’t have that much fans overseas. Hmm. So SNSD fans does buy more than 1 album to provide a win for them in music shows. Also, I’m surprise that U-Kiss is so high in the ranking and DBSK is so low. Maybe this does prove that U-Kiss is more popular outside Korea. Just like Supernova.

[EDIT]
I apologize, I did not see that Super Junior fan page.

Anyway, congrats to Super Junior for being the most popular Korean artist on Facebook. This is a big accomplishment since Facebook is a worldwide social networking site unlike Daum. Feel free to comment if there’s any inconsistencies with what I wrote or if I have forgotten an artist.

[EDIT]
I checked and double checked and tripled checked the information above after I had that mistake on Super Junior. I am confident that at Dec 17, these are the most popular facebook groups of the artist that was mentioned. As the days goes by, these FB page will grow and I can’t keep updating this post.

Dance Versions Part 1

November 4, 2010

To make an inform decision for my farewell project, I bring you the latest dance versions of your favorite KPOP idols. Choose your pic. By the way, when I say dance version, I meant dance versions. Not dance cut clips taken in their MV. It has to be continuous. So without further ado. I bring you, SM artists.

Super Junior’s “It’s You”

SNSD’s “Oh”

SHINee’s “Lucifer”

Sorry if the dance vids I’ll post are not everyone in the list. Not all did a dance version of their songs. And, I’ll say it again. Put your bias aside when deciding. We all want our idols to be on top, but we have to be impartial to get a genuine Top Ten. If you can’t help being bias or anti of a group, don’t include them in your analysis. Next group will be posted really quick.

[EDIT]

DBSK’s “Mirotic”

10 Most Talented Idol Groups – g.o.d, DBSK, and 2AM

October 26, 2010

Here’s the third batch for my farewell project. Again these are not the final 10. These are just mere vids, for me to see your reaction. Comment if you must. But again, please put your bias aside.

g.o.d.’s 헤어짐보다 아픈 그리움

I know I said only fancams but I’m gonna make an excemption for g.o.d. and the other old school KPOP, because it is so rare to see them live and fancams taken usually are lipsync since it is also rare to see them sing live at the time. And since I’m using music show performance for g.o.d., I think it would only be fair if 2AM and DBSK vids in this section are also music show performance. Doesn’t really matter much since they are not dancing in the vids I took.

2am’s Confession of a Lover

DBSK’s You’re My Melody
