[Chart] Online 2010: Week 01 January

January 8, 2010

I’m systematizing my chart posts right now. Aside for the weekly charts, I’ll will also post the monthly charts so we’ll see how much one week affects the ranking. Also, for those who visits my blog for the online charts, I’ll be posting these charts on a Thursday or a Friday instead of the usual Tuesday or Wednesday. The reason, the Bugs chart. Bugs posts their charts on a Thursday while the rest post theirs on a Sunday or Monday. This means when I write about the charts before, Bugs was always a week late. So I’ve decided to move it.

Going to the charts, Gain and Jo Kwon’s “We Fell In Love” is really doing so well. And from what I’ve heard, they finished 2nd on the Jan 8 episode of Music Bank. Quite a feat actually since both don’t have as massive fans as those with SM Entertainment. It just means the song is good.

On Yesasia and Hanteo, 2pm is on top among the artists that are promoting right now. They maybe have a chance to win one with “Tired of Waiting”. I say maybe because I actually doubt they can win. “Tired of Waiting” is a good song but the public has already taken what they can from the song. Technically, the said song is the first single from the 1:59 album. Before “Heartbeat” was released, “Tired of Waiting” was already topping a lot of charts. If they promoted “I Was Crazy About You”, they might have more of a shot in winning.

The show was actually good but SBS just really did a hell of a job in their Gay Festival. Maybe it’s also on my part. I mean I kept on comparing SBS to MBC as the show went on. With all honesty, SBS should have been the year ender special. Nothing against MBC and KBS but you would really see who made the most effort in giving an outstanding show. SBS had the best stage, the best MCs, and the most varied performances.

Now, going to the show. I expected highly on the 2pm and SNSD special but I was a little disappointed. I don’t know. Last year, Wonder Girls and Big Bang did a great job and I was actually hoping that both SNSD and 2pm can give the same excitement. Maybe they’re tired or something. It seemed lackluster and the chemistry was a bit off in the pairing.

Also, MBC brought in people who didn’t made such an impact in 2009. I mean, Tae JinAh and Park Hyun Bin. I’m sorry, but did they release any songs this year? I write a weekly online chart article and I can’t remember writing their name.

I think the reason why it’s not as exciting as it should be is that there are fewer fans in the audience. In SBS, you can hear the cheer and wow. I’m not saying though that the show was an epic fail, my expectations weren’t just met. There were fantastic performance. Kim Tae Woo’s Love Rain was the best on that show. Well, for me it was. Kinda surprise because I never was a fan of the song. Also, After School and Dambi’s After School number did turn up the excitement level a notch.

Well, there you have it. That’s pretty much all that I want to say. Wait, one more thing. At the beginning of the show, they said that they will award an artist of the year but I’m not sure if they did. I was waiting for allkpop or K bites to publish the winner like what they did to 2pm in KBS. If anyone knows, please comment on this article. I do wanna know.

I hope next year will be better though. I hope it would be better. I’m wasting 9 hours of my vacation to watch those Gayo Festivals.

October 30, 2009

Park Hyo Shin won last Thursday’s M Countdown. From what I’ve gathered, this is his second but I don’t know if he won last week or if there was none last week. Apparently, M Countdown was cancelled a week ago and I think it’s the same reason as Music Bank. But unlike MB, Mnet did not post the ranking from last week. Accdg to their site, the chart below is from the 23rd to the 39th of October. Anyway, congrats still to Park Hyo Shin.

Here’s the entire ranking.
01 Park Hyo Sin – After Love

2008 Music Bank Winners

October 29, 2009

Lately, I’ve been trying to complete the Cyworld Song of the month winners. I never really thought it would be this hard to complete the list. Right now, I know for sure that there are 39 of them. Other than that, I’m lost. Wikipedia isn’t really that much help. Remember the SNSD-SS501-Big Bang dilemma? But it seems SNSD fans caved. August 2007 and February 2009 are no longer in the awards section of the group’s wikipedia page.

I started thinking about music shows. I know Music Bank charts are well documented in kbs.co.kr. I thought maybe the winners of those weeks might be winners of a few Cyworld song of the month. Anyway, here’s what I got. I decided to post the Music Bank winners. Kbs.co.kr only filed as far back as January of 2008. I compiled only the 2008 winners since it’s only the 2007-2008 that I’m having trouble with.

(12/19/08) – Baek Ji Young (It’s Like Being Shot by a Bullet)
(12/26/08) – Big Bang (Sunset Glow)

Here’s a recap of the winners and how many times they won:
Big Bang – 10
Wonder Girls – 9
Jewelry – 7
MC Mong – 5
Baek Ji Young – 4
Lee Hyori – 3
Haha – 2
Brown Eyed Girls – 1
Brown Eyes – 1
Davichi – 1
DBSK – 1
Kim Jong Kook – 1
Lee Seung Gi – 1
Seo Taiji – 1
SNSD – 1
VOS – 1

Looking above, I never thought DBSK just one once. I wasn’t that into Kpop during the November-December of last year. School was giving me too much work. SNSD also won once too. Weird, I read somewhere that SNSD were the hype in early 2008. Well, maybe it was just another one of those false advertising of fans. Never really been a fan of SNSD. To be honest, it’s only with “Gee” that I came to know them.

2008 was really the year of Big Bang and the Wonder Girls apparently. They won so much. It’s kinda nostalgic really. I got into K-pop when the Wonder Girls were performing “So Hot”. And from there, I was day by day amazed by the pop scene in Korea.

Nothing against the winners of this year, I think last year was more exciting and competitive. Well, maybe it’s just me. There were just a lot of artist that are absent this year that I had familiarized Kpop with. Rain, Lee Hyori, DBSK and especially the Wonder Girls and Big Bang. A lot might have happened also this year, but last year had more glamour.

The Most Talented Korean Idol

October 26, 2009

I know a lot of you are waiting for this and I apologize. Life has been really tough on me lately. Before I crown the most talented Korean Idol, let’s first do an analysis of the remaining two idols and have a recap of the list.

For new readers of this blog, I’ve created the list for the 10 Most Talented Korean Idol as a 100th day project of my blog. I took every member of existing idol groups and eliminate idols one after the other until there were only 10 left. My criteria for elimination is their singing ability, dancing skills and overall charms. Also, I had 2 assumptions when I was go over the list. One, charms will be treated with equal weight with singing and dancing abilities. And they’re solo project starts this very instant.

A little recap of the list.
10 Lee Junho
09 U-Know Yunho
08 TOP
07 Min Sunye
06 CL
05 Hero Jaejoong
04 Park Jaebeom
03 Taeyang

Our remaining contenders are G-Dragon of Big Bang and Xiah Junsu of DBSK. This is a close fight all the way. You can’t imagine how much I’ve change my decision. I’ll explain it as I go on. I suggest you completely read the article and not browse at the bottom of the page so you’ll completely see how I got my conclusion.

Both idols are the two most gifted in the business right now. But both with different appeal and skills. They seem to be the complete opposite of each other. Xiah Junsu’s strength is in ballads while G-Dragon is in rap. Personality-wise, they also differ so much. Xiah Junsu is fun and animated while G-Dragon is conserve and quiet. The only time G-Dragon let loose is when he’s with Taeyang and Seung-ri. Well, judging from what I’ve seen. Before anything else, here are some performance of our remaining to idols.

Xiah Junsu

G-Dragon

So let’s run it down. First vocal abilities. This is actually hard to compare since G-Dragon raps and Xiah Junsu does ballads.

I was first introduced to Big Bang when I saw their Tell Me Lie stage collaboration with the Wonder Girls. I never heard about them till then but I found myself a fan after watching the said collaboration. Lies is such an extremely addicting song. It wasn’t until “Last Farewell” that I appreciated G-Dragon more. I remember that line, “Big Bang is back, most definitely incredible”. I don’t know if it made an impact to other people but to me it did. It was the first time I noticed how fluid his rapping is. Almost like singing.

G-Dragon has got to be the most fluid rapper right now. Fluid in a sense that I don’t get tired listening to him. I don’t know about you guys but there would be instances that I would wish that a rap part would end quickly. Like Miryo’s part in “How Come?”, Yunho in “Mirotic”, and TOP in “Always” to name a few. But G-Dragon never made me think that way. He seems like singing when he’s rapping because of how fluid it is. It’s just perfect the way it is.

With Xiah Junsu, I think everyone will agree that he is the best balladeer. Sorry Lee Seung Gi. If you’re following my post, you’ll know that I just recently became a fan of DBSK. I forced myself to watch their performances because of this 100th day project of mine and I didn’t regret that I did listen to them. The first time I ever heard DBSK sang was “You’re My Melody” in their Chocolate performance and the first time I noticed Xiah was when he hit that high note coming from a low note. I’m not a singer but I do know that’s hard to do. After watching them perform “You’re My Melody”, I searched more of their vids and I stumbled on his piano battle with Taeyang. I honestly feel that Taeyang won that battle just because he spoke English better. I barely understood Xiah’s singing. But that performance was somewhat the turning point of my appreciation to him. He really hits those high notes with accuracy and he’s one of those singers that can actually gives out emotions.

Next let’s go with dancing. No offense to their fans but I think the dancing abilities of both are mediocre. I don’t know if I’m using the proper term but it was just ok if you compare them with other dancers in the business. Nothing really much to say because both are just ok in dancing.

Now here’s the tricky part, the charms. I’ll divide it to looks and personality. G-Dragon definitely have the edge in this department, thought the guy’s choice of wardrobe is a little suspicious. No offense again to DBSK fans, I never really saw Xiah Junsu as someone who can kill with his looks.

I’m not saying he’s ugly he’s just not as idol pretty as the rest of them. But he does make it up with his personality. Both GD and Xiah have guested in Family Outing. In both of their episodes, there was another guest that they had to share the spotlight with. From what I’ve seen Xiah is more interesting. Again, I apologize to fans but GD is a little boring.

I’m not just judging it with their FO guesting but with other variety shows as well. G-Dragon is not that entertaining if he’s not performing. It’s added incentive if you can get people to be interested in you. 2pm is the prime example of this. JYP’s proteges’ songs are not really that good but people put a lot of interest to them because they like the members. And I really think that GD needs more of this.

So here’s my verdict, the Most Talented Korean Idol would have to be Xiah Junsu of DBSK. I know a lot of you would be surprise with this because of the recent success of G-Dragon but looking long term, GD is in the disadvantage. He can really rap but his singing is not really on top of them. What will happen once he ages? Right now, if both debuts as a solo artist, both will experience so much success. But things would be different 10 years from now. Rap is really just for young people. I’m a Big Bang fan but I don’t know if I’ll still be cheering him on if he does what he is doing now a decade later. Basically, G-Dragon lost the title because Xiah has more charms and the latter’s genre will help him more long term.

There you have it. The Ten Most Talented Korean Idol. I know most of you would agree with my list. To those who don’t, I really can’t do anything about it. I’m happy with the list and I’m happy with my project. Thank you all for making my 100th day project truly meaningful. Next up, 1 year anniversary project. Let’s see if this blog will make it that long.

3rd Most Talented Korean Idol: Taeyang

October 18, 2009

There’s only three left to go and I know all of you saw this coming. The 3rd Most Talented Korean Idol is Big Bang’s very own Taeyang. Together with G-Dragon, Taeyang trained in YG Entertainment for many years before debuting as members of Big Bang. Though they grew up together in the said company, G-Dragon and Taeyang offers two different things in Big Bang. G-Dragon is a rapper while Taeyang became the main vocalist of the group.

Taeyang went this far in the rankings because of his singing abilities and his smooth dancing. He has this certain resemblance with Jaebeom of 2pm but I think the similarities is just in their built. Both have different style in dancing and in singing. Both were also at one time were rumored to be dating Wonder Girls’ Min Sunye. Haha. That was just for laughs.

Anyway, what separates Taeyang from the rest of the people in the list is the combination of his talents and charisma. I mean his singing is as smooth as his dancing. I really love how well he can dance. He can make the choreography seems easy. And also, his looks isn’t that bad. I think he is the most charming in their group.

Of all the members of Big Bang, I think he’s the most consistent performance-wise. Taeyang is actually similar to Min Sunye in a way that he gives it his all whether it be in practice or in stage.

My only comment to him is his lack of excitement in interviews when he is alone. I mean it feels like there’s nothing to look forward to because you know nothing special will happen. And all that he’s gonna say are information that you could read on the internet. I think variety won’t be his thing.

Anyway, that’s it for Taeyang. I apologize if it took me a bit to post this. Everything has been hectic lately. I’ll be posting my next article on this by the end of the week. I will put both Xiah Junsu and G-Dragon in one article. I think the excitement will be gone if I post it separately. That’s it. I’ll leave you with Taeyang’s piano version of Don’t Wanna Try.
