10th Most Talented Idol Group: g.o.d.

December 5, 2010

Finally, the top ten. I’m confident with the ten that I picked and I know you guys won’t argue with it. Saying that, our 10th place are the former proteges of JY Park. JYP is now known to be the only company to make a hit of every single group he debuted. And this string of hit groups started with g.o.d.

g.o.d. is one of the few if not the only group from old school Korea that can actually compete with the idols of today. Some of you might not have the chance to know these guys, since it’s been years since the last time they were active, but I can guarantee that the time spent looking them up would not be a waste.

As I said in my previous posts, this ranking is to judge idol groups’ performances. What’s good about g.o.d. is that they know what they are. They know what they can do and they know where they are good at. No pretense. Cough H.O.T. Cough. Cough B2ST Cough. g.o.d’s music has a rap/street kinda sound which is a rarity at the time. I think the only ones who were doing music like g.o.d’s were Sechkies. But if you listen to Eun Jiwon’s group and Son Hoyoung’s group, you’ll immediately know the difference. It’s really hard to explain pretence so I’ll give an example. f(x)’s Amber, Wonder Girls’ Yoobin, and Brown Eyed Girls’ Miryo are rappers. Kara’s Nicole, Secret’s Zinger and 4minute’s maknae are not. There is a big difference between a rapper and a person who can rap. I know it’s hard to understand what I just said but I hope you get the idea. Being able to hold a high note doesn’t necessarily mean you can be a singer. And that’s what the difference between g.o.d. and other idol groups from then, as well as now. They know what they are and they built their success on that.

Another thing, g.o.d. is the only old school idol group that is actually good live. Nothing against other groups from that time, but you would really feel talent on g.o.d. It’s actually strange that instead of today’s groups singing more live, lipsynching is more of an option. At the time of g.o.d., there was no trainee period. Members were chosen through auditions and not a pile of trainees the company has prepared beforehand. Makes you wonder.

Saying that, g.o.d. placed only 10th in this ranking because of their limitations. The group can compete with some idols today but there is no way they can out-battle the remaining groups. The 9 that remained are trained to sing and dance at the same time. Meaning the 9 groups has more variety to show since they are not just singers but also are dancers. Again I’ll raise my point. A dancer is different to someone who can manipulate his body to fit the routine. But still, you can’t help but be amaze. Hope idol groups today will take into heart the importance of singers singing live.

I’ll leave you with my favorite performances of g.o.d.

g.o.d. – Road

g.o.d. – 헤어짐보다 아픈 그리움

10 Most Talented Idol Groups: Eliminated – Wonder Girls

November 29, 2010

I’m a big Wonder Girls fan and as I wanna believe that they are one of the ten most talented idol groups, the numbers just do not support that. It’s too bad actually. Just one more. If they could have just beat one more group, but the ten remaining are just performing better than Wonder Girls. I’m a hardcore fan but not a delusional fan. Just have to accept it.

Wonder Girls debut three years ago as the first female group under JYP. They are known to have successfully released three consecutive songs that are considered legendary in the Kpop World, “Tell Me”, “So Hot”, and “Nobody”. This blog wouldn’t even be possible if I didn’t saw Wonder Girls’ “So Hot”. It is this song that pulled me into Kpop. The song was catchy and they were so precise in the edges of the routine.

Now going to the ranking, Wonder Girls got this far because of their performance. Of all the girl groups out there, well with the exception of ballad groups, Wonder Girls are the only ones who almost always sings live. It’s a rarity for you to see Wonder Girls lip-sync. And with regards to their dancing, their very good on stage. Almost like Miss A actually.

A few years ago there was this rivalry between Wonder Girls and SNSD. SONEs will always argue that SNSD are better singers and Wonderfuls will argue back that Wonder Girls are better stage performers. To be honest, I think if there was a competition between these two, talent-wise Wonder Girls will win. Well if it is 5 against 9 all the way and not what happened in that year end special where they place both girl groups against each other. There were numerous rounds in that so called “battle” but not all of SNSD were in every rounds. As I said in my SNSD Elimination post, there is just so much that SNSD can do with all 9 of them since the overlap in their talent is very little. But in Wonder Girls, they compliment each other that’s why they make their performances work.

“So Hot” is in my opinion is the best that Wonder Girls have released. Well, to my liking. “Nobody” is indeed their most successful song. It is the most popular Kpop song in the world. What I like about “So Hot” is that it showed how good Wonder Girls are. If I’m gonna call it out, “So Hot” is a very difficult song that of all the girl groups active, only After School can do justice to it. I thought every Kpop artist are as good as Wonder Girls at the time. And then I saw Kara and SNSD, I knew immediately Wonder Girls were better than them. No offense, Kara and SNSD performances are easy. Again, I’m basing it on performances as a whole. All 5 of Kara and all 9 of SNSD. Their routines doesn’t have as much edges as Wonder Girls.

In terms of talent, three are amazing while 2 are just wallflower. They have two great singers and 1 amazing rapper. But as I said, they make it work somehow. They compliment each other. I find it odd that other groups finds it difficult to do the same. If you think about it, 4minute is like Wonder Girls individually. But 4minute just can’t get it together. I think the biggest arsenal of Wonder Girls is their timing and blocking. All 7 Wonder Girls (including HyunA and Sunmi) have this great sense of timing. From Irony to 2DT the blocking is amazing. I think only dancers can truly appreciate this. I recommend watching these performances.

Over the years, Wonder Girls have been criticize for their so called lack of talent. And I think the argument all are directed to Sohee. Sunye and Ye Eun can seriously sing and Yoobin raps so you can’t attack her for not singing. So if their gonna attack talent, go after Sunmi/Hyerim or Sohee. But since Sunmi/Hyerim are in tune, antifans will attack Sohee. The thing with Sohee is, it’s not that she can’t sing but she sings her parts softly that you can almost not hear it. I think she can sing. She is the one in the track singing isn’t she? I don’t know why she does it. Maybe she was asked to sing like that by JYP or maybe she got sick or something. She wasn’t like that in their Irony promotion. But now with Sunmi’s departure, Sohee has to step up since Hyerim is not as dependable as Sunmi. I think Sohee should even be the one singing Sunmi’s part since her voice is much huskier than Hyerim.

f(x) got eliminated in this ranking because they were not as polished as the groups that remained. This time Wonder Girls are eliminated because they are not as explosive as those that remained. This ranking is to determined the Most Talented Idol Group in Korea. And though Wonder Girls are more popular than After School and Infinite. The latter two groups can do more than Wonder Girls. At this high in the ranking, it’s no longer what group is better than what group. Everyone is pretty much even. It is now about who can do more.

With Wonder Girls elimination, we finally have our “10 Most Talented Idol Groups”.

As you can see, every song that 2AM has released (well of course excluding the recently released) is in the top 100. This is what I’ve been saying. 2AM is the busiest group of 2010. They are just everywhere this year. And given that, I think they will win Artist of the Year at least one of the year-end awards.

Is 2AM part of JYPE?

November 13, 2010

With the recent news on the supposed JYPE artist’s concerts, it makes me wonder if 2AM is really part of JYPE? When Wonder Girls has their first concert, 2AM came to support them. Same goes with 2PM in their concert. But now that 2AM is having their first concert, the JYPE family is having one also at the same time. So technically both JYP and 2AM are competing to get people on their concert.

According to wikipedia, JYP artists are Wonder Girls, Joo, and 2PM only. Yes, no 2AM and Miss A. According to wikipedia, Miss A is with AQ Entertainment and 2AM is with Big Hit Entertainment along with 8eight. A friend of mine that this is nothing I should bother myself because their sister companies but, Cube Entertainment is also supposed to be JYPE’s “sister” company. Does that mean 4minute, BEAST and G.NA are JYPE? But why was their ever any reference of Cube Entertainment as JYP?

Going back to 2AM, I think Jo Kwon is feeling hurt by this. I just think so. It does seem like JYP abandoned them. And to think that 2AM was bigger than 2PM this year.

Wonder Girls & antis comesback with “2 Different Tears”

May 20, 2010

Wonder Girls officially made their comeback in the Kpop mainstream earlier today in Mnet Countdown. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting their performance to be spectacular, eye-catching, and mesmerizing. Though it’s the Wonder Girls, we are still talking about Mnet Countdown. A show that lacks the budget to update their equipment.

I like the performance. Wasn’t crazy about it, but it will do considering the stage. Or probably because I miss them performing in Korea. Mnet (stage and sound) aside, I think it is kinda lacking. Or probably the low quality video of the show contaminated my view. New member Hye Lim did great but I kept noticing her. Not in a good way. The other four has this snap on the edges of the routine, but Hye Lim was smooth. Too smooth. Something she needs to work on. But as I said, it will do. Even with this, they are better than some girl groups that are around. I really can’t wait for them to perform in a much better stage like Music Bank.

I find it odd that people say that the performance sucks. Yes, it’s not extravagant but it’s not bad. I feel bad for Wonder Girls actually. They had a busy week but people are judging their entire existence with this performance. Ok, so they had a comeback that is less than expected. But are they the only ones? How ’bout SNSD’s comeback with “Gee”? Almost half the group were ill back then. You can hear Taeyeon struggling with her notes. And also 4minute’s debut. You just can’t judge a group with one less than perfect performance when they have dozens of performance in perfection.

Also, they were judging the song like it’s the worst song ever made in Kpop. It’s actually funny. These are songs that Wonder Girls are known for. Have they heard “Tell Me”? Well, maybe they will love it in time. Going back in history, “Tell Me” was a late bloomer. The girls release “Tell Me” in the first week of September but only gained fame in October. As well as “Nobody”. Remember, “Nobody” never won first place in Inkigayo but yet, this song skyrocketed the Wonder Girls popularity around the world.

I don’t know what to say anymore to be honest. Just can’t help but laugh. I’m a very straight forward person. I criticize everything I feel needs to be criticize. I say it how it is. But I’m no hater. I’m not a fan of SNSD but I never said that they sucked. I just hope fans would grow up. I mean, have sense. Make sure what they’re saying have sense.

Here’s a few anti comments in allkpop that’s worth mentioning:
1.) “Nobody” became what it is in the US because of the Jonas Brother only.
2.) Hye Lim is not pretty.
3.) Sohee can’t sing.
4.) It’s downhill for the Wonder Girls.

Reading the comments, it felt like I was dealing with bunch of 12 year olds. I mean how immature can they be? Some are even dragging SNSD’s name which I think is very unfair. SNSD really has amazingly scary fans. Seriously.

Well, tomorrow is another performance. I know they would be better.

Wonder Girls releases “2 Different Tears”

May 16, 2010

In a span of 24 hours, JYP and Wonder Girls released their new song “2 Different Tears” as well as its MV. The song and MV is fun and catchy. Typical for a Wonder Girls song. Can’t get “Shape Like a Pikachu” out of my head. To tell you quite frankly I thought I would hate it but I find myself singing to the chorus.

Two Different Tears
After all these years
Tears of Joy, Tears of Pain
Like sunshine and rain”

You have to admit, it is quite catchy. For some reason, it reminds me of “Tell Me”. Maybe because of it’s obvious retro sound. Of all the songs that Wonder Girls has released, I like “So Hot” and “Irony” the most. “So Hot” is the reason why I fell in love with the Wonder Girls to begin with.

“2 Different Tears” as said by many, isn’t really as powerful as “Nobody”, “Irony”, and “So Hot”. I agree with that but the song does have its charm. I kinda like that JYP is mixing things up. From what I’ve read in the comment section of the video, they were comparing the new song to “Nobody”. Comparing to the point that they want Nobody Part2. But think about it. If JYP will just produce songs like “Nobody” and just “Nobody”, the audience will be saturated. “Nobody” has been playing for almost 2 years. So coming out with a song like “2 Different Things” is a great idea to spice up the girls’ portfolio of songs.

Also, I think the dance suits the song. People were claiming that it should be more explosive like with “So Hot”. But if JYP did that, the choreography would not go with the beat of the song. I’m a dancer so I have a little knowledge on these things. If JYP made it more extravagant, then it would be like dancing “Bang” to the song “Gee”. That wouldn’t go well.

I’m not crazy with “2 Different Tears” yet but I do like it. Maybe it will grow on me. It seems like a song that will grow on you. I didn’t like “Tell Me” and “Nobody” when I first heard it at first but it grew on me. These two songs did solidify Wonder Girls hold in the Asian market and paved way to their debut in America.

To be honest, I’m not sure if this song will be a hit and win awards considering Super Junior is around. I stand on my belief. Fan Girls will always be crazier than Fan Boys. Also, from what I heard, no solid copies will be sold. I’m not sure if they’re not really selling. I’m still checking it. But if it is true, then it would be hard for Wonder Girls to win in Music Bank. The show does rely heavily on physical album sold.

I’m very interested what will happen with this song. I don’t think Wonder Girls will be promoting this song long since they are planning to release a full album by July I heard. So let’s see. “Tell Me”, “So Hot”, and “Nobody”. Is “2 Different Tears” destined to be among these songs that have already established themselves to society and carved their hold in the hearts and memories of millions?

Check out the MV. The Pikachu thing really surprised me. JYP’s humor is really weird.

Here’s a fancam of their performance. Classic Wonder Girls. Lim did well but I think Sunmi would have done better. Well, we can’t stay in the past forever.

Aja! Wonder Girls
Wonder Girls Fighting!

Wonder Girls teases with teaser

May 14, 2010

JYP recently released a video teaser of the Wonder Girls’ new song, “2 Different Tears”. The video somehow reminds me of that 1960s Batman and Robin show. I don’t know. Maybe because how much cartoonish the video is. I don’t think the song used here is part of the song. I mean is sounds somehow generic. Anyway, at least the video did what it is supposed to. It teased. Check it out.

Can’t wait.
